Controversial ‘Bharatmata’ painting withdrawn..
Under attack from Hindu fundamentalists over his painting allegedly depicting “Bharatmata” in an nude, noted painter M. F. Hussain last night apologised, and the controversial painting to go into auction in an exhibition in Delhi today was withdrawn. In the wake of persistent protests by the Hindu Janjagruti Samiti (HJS) and VHP for displaying the painting on websites, Hussain said he apologised to the people for the same. Sharan Apparao, curator of Apparao Galleries in Delhi where the painting was to go into auction, said she had been receiving numerous calls regarding the painting with people demanding its withdrawal. “There were many calls, mostly from Maharashtra. Some of them were using abusive language which I think is not acceptable. But, basically some of them were saying remove the nude painting. Don’t sell India, why is Mother India being shown nude,” she said. The HJS had filed a case with the Mumbai and Thane police and appealed to President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take action against the “anti-national and perverse attitude of the great artist”. The outfit had held demonstrations against Hussain in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Husain is back where he finds himself often - in the middle of a controversy over his nudes. This time, he is in the firing line of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and Vishwa Hindu Parishad over a painting, Bharath Mata, which has a nude woman's outline resembling the map of India.

Anonymous writes "While contemporary Indian art becomes solid gold for investment, other arts don’t find many takers

ALKA RAGHUVANSHI

India has always perceived of art as part of a flowing river syndrome - nothing was forever and yet within the ephemeralness there has been the permanence of continuity. This year the perception that art is some kind of a super blue chip investment percolated to the middle classes and the clamouring for art hit an all-time high. All kinds of art found buyers and art for its sake became a thing of the past. The new mantra was art for investment sake. The only people laughing all the way to the bank were artists who suddenly found that whatever they produced had takers! Nevermind that people ended up buying a lot of morbid, disturbing art that they couldn’t live with. Finally contemporary art in India seemed to have come into its own.

MF Hussains Paintings Hussain to paint ‘Iqbal’ theme
Posted by admin on Wednesday, August 31 @ 17:02:42 CDT (1515 reads)

Anonymous writes "Famed artist M.F. Hussain graced the screening of Subhash Ghai’s Iqbal, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, a few days ago. Highly inspired by the theme of Iqbal -- of bravery, pride and human achievement -- Hussain called upon Ghai and expressed his desire to create paintings on its theme. It may be noted that the gifted artist has never put a film on canvas except for the ones directed by him.

When Nagesh Kukunoor gave up his job of a chemical engineer to make movies, he couldn’t have imagined that seven years later, his film’s premiere would be one of the most attended events in Bollywood. Last Wednesday, when Iqbal was shown at Fame Adlabs (Andheri), the who’s who of the film fraternity turned up to congratulate Kukunoor on what is his first foray into Hindi-language cinema."
